What is Equine-Assisted Therapy?
EAP is a growing experiential modality which incorporates horses for emotional growth and learning. Each session is a collaborative effort facilitated by a Mental Health Professional and Equine Specialist. Participants learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses and then processing thoughts, beliefs, behaviors and patterns. Unlike therapeutic riding, EAGALA Model sessions are non-mounted. They are additionally solution-focused and are based on a code of ethics.
Certification for licensed therapists and equine specialists involves completion of Fundamentals of EAGALA Model Practice Part 1 and Part 2 trainings: Part 1 provides the foundation for practicing this work and Part 2 provides the opportunity to apply this work in various scenarios. Completion of these trainings will provide the professional with the tools necessary to effectively incorporate horses experientially in mental health treatment and other human development and learning areas.
